i wish i lived in a town like this when i was younger.. i would have followed all of these different paths of color everywhere, for hours and hours.

the people in the village of vercorin open themselves up to artists every year to see what can be created within their small part of the earth. this year, lang/baumann created this:

just a couple photos from our wedding in october. a small ceremony on the coast and then a party the next day with all of our family & friends on boston harbor at the end of fish pier. the weekend's weather was amazing- we literally couldn't have asked for a better october blast of warmth- and the outdoor area of our party was packed the whole night. overall a great success :) and of course, i'm a mrs. now!

sometimes i get sucked into a lifetime movie. it happens. i saw some commercials a few weeks ago for a new lifetime show called picker sisters that piqued my interest, so i made a point to record a few episodes to check it out.

premise: two friends who happen to be interior designers travel the country and buy junky metal relics and odd industrial structures and create whole new furniture pieces for your home and sell it out of their storefront in los angeles. some of the concepts they envision are so great.

if offbeat, industrial-style home furniture is up your alley it's definitely worth a view. the girls are a little goofy, but i think it makes them likable. you can tell they're really friends, not just playing the part. i like that they're reusing things that are just sitting around; great repurposing.

i was hanging some vinyl records in my newly painted gray office/second bedroom, and decided to run a little search to see how other people have displayed their vintage music decoratively in their home. i found something totally not what i was looking for, but awesome none the less. i'll get to that in a minute. first, a small note on my office/second bedroom overhaul.

we've had these records displayed before, focusing mainly on the album artwork, but the fresh new coventry gray color called for a sleeker, more cohesive display of music. hanging them naked, without their skins, works for me! a small step in the room makeover, but it's a start! (excuse the photo, the iphone was the only accessible option at the time..) more later once the rooms starts to come together!

onto the art! while searching for how others utilize their vinyls, i came across jean shin's work, specifically, his sound wave piece, which i thought was fantastic; a play on the changing tides of music trends and the way we access recordable sounds.

poking around some more, his installations are all really thoughtful and he utilizes a lot of found and tossed objects in bulk, in order to give them new life: medicine bottles, keys, lottery scratch tickets, umbrellas, coins.. the list goes on. take a peek, you won't be disappointed.

talk about telling a story with a photo.. every one of these has a history, a past, a something-just-happened tale to tell. i just read about this collaborative photo project on my love for you, between jo metson scott & nicola yeoman (photographer and set designer/artist, respectively), in which the duo created a world within the woods. the curious photos speak for themselves, weaving a narrative like a moment in a fairy tale.

after exploring further, nicola's other work stood out to me as well, especially her typography work. a mess of elements coming together to create a whole. (the first two images below were also photographed by jo metson scott, for the cover of the new york times.)

i made my way up to the most wonderful plant and garden store i've encountered in chicago this past weekend and made attempt number two at creating a small beginning at some plant life for my back porch, which serves as my back yard. still in the process, but it's a start! and these herbs aren't dead or frozen (yet?) so there's the first step!

we'll see how we do with these for a bit, then take it to the next step (hanging baskets? upside down tomatoes?? maybe some woolly pockets? i know, i'm getting crazy..) i can't wait to use that basil!

i just took a look at daniela rivera's work after i saw her growth installation posted on new american paintings. her new work at the lamontagne gallery in boston is essentially a site-specific landscape of panels that relies on the interaction of the viewer for the full work to come to fruition.

i just really love that mossy green exploding everywhere like an overgrown yard.

living in the city of chicago, and not exactly owning the biggest lot of land, i don't have the opportunity right now to have my own garden surrounded with rocks and wildflowers and all of that nature stuff. my little deck will hopefully harbor some new plants soon as long as it warms up a bit. the herbs i had started from seeds died over the weekend due to the drop in temps from 90 to 40 degrees in the span of a few hours (i'm going to blame the weather and not my wannabe-green thumb).

until i can get some new plants and figure out exactly how much i can fit into my space in the sun, the internets (and pinterest!) are providing some fantastic inspiration and ideas for growing. vertical? potted? lots of possibilities..

i actually just ordered this little guy from plaid pigeon the other day!

perusing the internets today i came across an image posted on oncewed that pretty much made me stop dead. this ceremony occurred with lots of pinks and soft neutral hues, it's really beautiful. but what made me catch my breathe was the tree.

louise richardson's beautifully crafted sculptures tell stories i can't even wrap my head around. it feels as though each part of her pieces holds a history. the images within the feathers piece are so quiet you almost don't notice them and her butterfly garments and snake skin sculptures carry so much movement for inactive pieces. you can really see the personal story aching to be told through each one.

i am currently looking at the idea of memory and identity, bringing universal messages to the viewer through the portrayal of objects in my own memory.

there isn't one piece of holton rower's work that isn't blowing my mind right now. drawn in first by a youtube video of his paint dripping process, i started to explore his other works and i'm fascinated by what i see.

his series of lock sculptures have so much flow to them, they lose their 'hard object' appearance. i think they're my favorite of the lot. or maybe the chainlink fence made of money. i can't decide.

i stumbled across durham press's blog the other day and i'm enamored with the photos they've posted of their printing process. i love to see how things are made and the stages a work goes through in order to reach it's end result. durham press is located in pennsylvania and artists are invited to use their facilities to produce originals, prints and experiment within their studios.

eszter burghardt creates these vast landscape photographs out of.. wait for it- food. in her studio. the first time i saw her edible vistas i thought maybe they were from a volcano in a rainforest somewhere far away. nope, just your everyday food products. amazing.

her work is based on the remote landscapes of iceland where she spent time in artists residencies. from her artist's statement: to re-live the barren highlands I chose poppy seeds, coco powder, coffee, milk, and chocolate cake crumbs to represent the various textures found in this landscape.

i know this has been talked about everywhere, but i just spent some time completely engrossed with the brushstrokes of some of the most amazing paintings ever. i'm amazed at how close and in focus some of these images are! if you haven't tooled around with it yet, check out the google art project. so smart and a great resource- i wish this had been around when i wrote that 25 page comparison paper on van gogh and gauguin's still lifes..

i finally got a chance to visit the museum of contemporary art in chicago the other day. i trudged through the snow and found my way inside to find a really clean space that allowed the work to shine.

aaron smith's use of paint is awesome. chunky, thick like buttercream frosting and each stroke is full of energy. and the colors. ohh the colors.

his newest series of bearded gentlemen portraits (entitled bearded blokes), which surely sounds less than very contemporary, is anything but. he proves any subject can be thrilling and full of life. you just have to find it, and bring it out. art crush indeed.

i won't lie- the cover of this book drew me in and i'm pretty sure had it not been such a beautiful book jacket, i may not have learned more about the pages and ultimately decided on it for my next read.

after researching some more about the cover artist, darren booth, it was interesting to learn more about his process in deciding where to go with the overall design- the type, colors and white backdrop.

since i'm on a papercutting kick right now, (i'll post more photos and updates on my project's progress after the xmas holiday..) when i saw simone lourenço's work on art hound the other day, it really struck me.

simone's papercut clusters are like a controlled chaotic paper party. a lot of layers of colors, placed in just the right way. her previous papercutting works are viewable on her website as well, and it's inspiring to see her progress- her papercuts have taken such a huge leap from 2 dimensions to 3d.

i just came across amy wilson faville's work on the jealous curator.

her cart series is a beautiful smash of pattern and collage. they look bright and beautiful, but then you look close and realize these are shopping carts, and they're filled with all of somebody's possessions and the pattern is just putting a pretty cover on a sad reality.

ork posters pop up shop in chicago? a few blocks from my house? done. i'm there.

i love ork posters- we have two screenprints in our house (chicago & boston) and i'm beginning to think i need to move again to a different city so i can buy another :) kidding. but not. and not only is the shop full of ork goodness, there's work from other great artists as well, like ryan kapp, yellena james, andy pratt and more.

if you're in the area, check it out- the shop is only poppin' until december 23rd.
